Power System Data Service
Energy Fundamental’s European Power System Data (EPSD) Service is an on-line data visualisation, analysis and retrieval system focused on European power markets. This subscription service is underpinned by a thoroughly researched, cross-checked and benchmarked database of information concerning European power plant.
(For TRIAL access, please see the bottom of this page)
Generation capacity, load, interconnection
The EPSD Service is focused on the requirements of power sector players to rapidly gain a comprehensive understanding of key market fundamentals for any European market. As such, the Service provides not only detailed information about the installed generation base (over 2000 individual plant are listed for Western Europe alone) but also hourly demand profiles and interconnector flow limits. High quality information of this nature is critical in supporting market analysis and modeling, as well as providing a knowledge foundation for anyone active in the sector.
Superior quality dataset
The core EPSD Service dataset has been developed and fine-tuned by sector experts during many years of research, cross checking and benchmarking. Initially developed for in-house use at a major European energy sector consultancy, the dataset has been applied to numerous consulting assignments involving price forecasting, asset valuation and M&A.
As well as using bottom-up research by a highly qualified team of energy sector experts, Energy Fundamentals applies frequent cross-checks in a top-down fashion to ensure that pivots by company, fuel and country match reported values. Numerous benchmarking exercises have been undertaken with the data, including the development of full European market models to successfully back-test historical market outcomes.

In short, the EPSD Service is built upon superior quality data, thus allowing our clients to focus on developing insights into power markets using data analysis and numerical modelling.
Web based data visualisation
By using a secure web-based platform, the Service unlocks the power of the dataset in a highly interactive manner that is continuously kept up to date. Individual plant can be viewed in detail, including geographic locations and photos. Custom plant selections can be plotted geographically, charted in various ways including merit orders utilizing up-to-date fuel prices, printed in report format, and downloaded as a spreadsheet.
Direct data exports into modeling tools
A key feature of the EPSD Service is the ability to connect to modeling platforms and other analytical tools that utilize fundamental generation sector data. This enables rapid and highly efficient analysis to be undertaken, by simply exporting custom data selections (usually countries). A powerful aggregation tool allows the user to select custom aggregation levels for different parts of the export, so that for example a detailed data export of Germany can be accompanied by a lower resolution (aggregated) export for the surrounding markets.
Key plant information forms the core
Besides load and interconnection information, the underlying core dataset contains detailed power plant data covering:
- Plant name, location, location co-ordinates
- Owner(s)
- Number of units, capacity per unit
- Fuel type(s), efficiency
- Variable and fixed operating costs
- Pump units, load and efficiency (hydro)
Where economic data cannot be sourced directly, values are auto-completed from an extensive and well-researched defaulting table.
Proprietary and clearly sourced data
All data accessible in the EPSD Service is 100% publically sourced. There are no third party products used in the Service, and no proprietary or confidential data.
Extensive sourcing references are made available to allow clients to judge for themselves the quality of data points. These are accessible as buttons linking directly to PDF files containing the source information.
Licensed by major energy sector players
This high quality yet affordable Service is licensed by a variety of energy sector players, ranging from large and small utilities through to investment banks and consultants.
